U.S.P.T.O. Publishes NPRM for Implementation of Micro Entity Status

As the U.S. Patent Office begins to roll out the implementation of the new provisions under the Leahy-Smith America Invents Act (AIA), one of the many changes that it brings is the creation of a micro entity status. Currently, there are two categories for paying U.S. Patent fees; large entity and small entity. Many small businesses, non-profit organizations, and independent inventors will fall under the small entity designation and thereby are entitled to a 50% discount on patent fees. The creation of the micro entity will allow qualified inventors a 75% discount on fees.
